Jump N Funk & Libation Celebrate FELA KUTI :: Thurs. 10/15

JUMP N FUNK & LIBATION

Present
FELABRATION @ S.O.B.'s!

(A Fête For the Birthday of Fela Kuti, the Knitting Factory Records Release Best of the Black President and the New Broadway Musical, FELA!)

It is rare that an artist erupts onto the musical landscape, defines a genre, shakes the world to its core and departs too soon leaving a legacy that can fill the night sky. Jazz had John Coltrane. Rock had Jimi Hendrix. Afrobeat had Fela Kuti. On THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15th two of NYC's most beloved soirees-Rich Medina's acclaimed Jump N Funk and the popular Tea Party Music & Manchildblack throwdown Libation-come together with Giant Step, Knitting Factory Records, FELA! The Musical, The Museum for African Art & S.O.B.'s to pay homage to the life of Nigeria’s warrior poet and the Godfather of Global Soul with FELABRATION!

FELABRATION takes its audience through an interactive journey of the life of Africa’s most prolific musical pioneer with a documentary, Music is the Weapon, live drummers, special performance by dance virtuosos Afro Mosaic Soul and leading the evening’s tribute are DJ Rich Medina, the global ambassador of Jump N Funk and DJ Ian Friday, minister of sound for Libation , ground zero for the Soul Revolution.

Fela Kuti was born October 15, 1938 in Abeokuta, Nigeria. In 1961 he formed Koola Lobitos in London, two years later, he created “Afrobeat”, which was inspired by James Brown, the Yoruba culture, high life and jazz. He founded a commune/recording studio called the Kalakuta Republic, complete with his own private nightclub, The Shrine.

His music served as a rallying cry for the disenfranchised, critiquing the military government and made Fela not only a pop star but a political figure as well. People took to the streets singing his songs and the military responded by viciously harassing Fela, jailing him and nearly killing him on several occasions. One million people attended his funeral in Nigeria.

The legacy of Fela Kuti continues to live on with the October 27th release of Best of the Black President on the newly revamped Knitting Factory Records. Over the next 18 months, remasters of all Fela CD's will be re-released in unique digi-packs w/ the original artwork. KFR will also release all the titles on vinyl for the first time in North America.

To further prove the cultural significance of this legend, the upcoming Broadway musical FELA! brings the colorful life of Fela Kuti front and center through a provocative hybrid of concert, dance and musical theatre. FELA! features arrangements by Aaron Johnson and Antibalas with direction and choreography by Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones.

October 15th only comes once a year. Don’t miss the opportunity to celebrate the life and work of an extraordinary man.

SOL ASCENSION w/ Joy Jones live & DJ Daz-I-Kue :: Sat. 9/19

Sol Ascension brings Joy To S.O.B’s...Joy Jones that is!
The Godchild is set to bring her universal message of music to the big apple to elevate the audience of S.O.B.’s on September 19th at Sol Ascension, NYC’s only destination for dance and global soul.

This LA native grew up being exposed to multiple music genres such as: Gospel, Soca, Classical, African Choral Music, Soul and Jazz. Her love of music as well as inspirational places and events that have helped to shape her life has armed Joy with a gift that enables her to seamlessly blend meaningful lyrics with eclectic sounds.

In July this disciple of color and composition released “Godchild”, her debut album. Joy has described this album as, “afro-beat lullabies, future jazz protest songs and electronic hymns.” “I've spent quite a bit of time thinking about what I want to say and the messages that I want to put out. This has been a complete labor of love and I hope that it translates and transforms into a tool for change.”

DJ Daz-I-Kue (Bugz in the Attic) will be on deck spinning a set that is sure to have every t-shirt in the house dripping with sweat. He rocked The Sullivan Room at Libation, ground zero for the soul revolution, and is back to give NYC another knockout punch.

Hosted by Manchildblack, recording artist and lyrical minister of the soul revolution, and presented by Hype Life Music, Sol Ascension fuses the best elements of global soul. With past performances from such artists as: Peven Everett, Wunmi, Mark de Clive and Lady Alma and DJs such as: Ian Friday, Osunlade, DJ Spinna and Rich Medina, Sol Ascension always delivers a mental and spiritual resurrection from the weekly grind.

S.O.B.’s is NYC’s legendary Mecca for global music and Sol Ascension will be sure to usher out summer 2009 with a bang. To order tickets please visit the S.O.B.’s box office orhttp://www.ticketweb.com.

Libation Spins “Circles” With Nathan Adams

Vocal sensation Nathan Adams is making his NYC debut, performing his underground club hit “Circles” at Libation, ground zero for the Soul Revolution, on September 10th 2009.
Like R&B legends such as Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke and Raphael Saadiq, this burgeoning 19-year-old crooner honed his vocal skills at church. Singing before he could talk, he was a featured soloist by age 4 and learned the piano by age 6. Nathan has performed in several venues across Europe and Croatia and in August 2007, he won the prestigious “291 Show” at Hackney Empire, beating many other artists to the prize. Nathan was also a UK Unsigned finalist for 2008.
“Circles” is the first release from Tribe Records. Nathan’s vocal talents combined with the production of Zepherin Saint have spun success for the new label. The track’s melodic keys along with echoes of haunting synth waves, understated bass and intricate percussive beats is a hit with Libation’s disciples and House heads worldwide.
Libation is the brainchild of DJ Ian Friday of Tea Party Music and recording artist Manchildblack and is the central headquarters for the Soul Revolution. Their mission is to bring universal awareness to the Global Soul movement. Global Soul is a form of dance music deeply rooted in the rhythms of the African Diaspora. With influences from Africa, the Caribbean, South and Central America, it is a musical genre that celebrates the rich history of a people and their culture. It is a movement seeking to change musical status quo. It is a musical coup d'état, a revolution of the ears and collective consciousness.
Every second and fourth Thursday of each month resident DJ Ian Friday digs deep in the crates of his eclectic collection to explore the multi-dimensional sounds of this music and invite all to dance, shout, evoke the spirit, pump their fists in air and deliver hosanna to the glory of Global Soul! Currently held at the famous West Village hotspot, The Sullivan Room, Libation is a spiritual gathering that gives its patrons a full course of aural and visual stimulation. As the soul revolution’s minister of sound, Ian spins sermons that continuously keep the wood floors warm from a dancing frenzy. Guests are treated to the agile moves of world renowned dance collective and Libation hosts, Afro Mosaic Soul. The party's in-house resident artist is none other than MTV Art Battle Winner Concep, who, along with his crew is always on hand to paint live on a blank canvas or even on the body parts of willing participants.

During its three year existence, Libation has also had the pleasure of presenting some of Global Soul's most influential and well respected DJs and performers including: DJ/producer Osunlade, Tony Humphries, Ron Trent, DJ Spinna, Rich Medina, Peven Everett, Karizma, Kindred The Family Soul, Eric (Erro) Roberson, Stephanie McKay, Wunmi and King Britt. It has also served as the after party for the 2009 House Dance International conference and the off-broadway musical FELA!
