Mark R. Brown


Mark Robert Brown was born, raised and educated in Los Angeles to three generations of distinguished and honored family in education, law, sports, entertainment, business and community. He is a gifted honors academic with merit from elementary school through his distinctions and Bachelors studies at the University of California Los Angeles. Mark is a spirited visionary. He has a progressive set of experiences which few others can match and unique life experiences which only a few ever experience.

Some of the explanation for Mark’s resolve lies in the fact that his family has been rooted in the entertainment business for generations. His great-grandfather, Willie Covan, is literally a figure of historical significance. Mark himself became a performer as a child. "Mark spent one-third of his growing up years on sound stages and in recording studios worldwide." A noted celebrity career, Mark’s theatrical and musical career was from the time he was 6 years old until he graduated from high school at age 18. Categorically as an African-American Child Performer Mark is among the all time working Artist in Television, Film, Radio, Recording, Print, and Performance. Mark was often "the first and only" Black Child Artist to do what he did (Hollywood Reporter, Daily Variety, 1960-1970’s). Articles in Time Magazine, ("Crossing The Color Lines ", Oct. 1968) and Ebony Magazine (" The New Generation", August 1978), are a testament to this. Mark represented himself, his family, his people and his culture with the utmost professionalism, and served as a ground breaking positive role model to the nation and the world. Theatrically and musically, like his great-grandfather before him, Mark is literally a figure of historical significance.

In 1987, Mark’s pattern of distinction in business began at Triad Artists Agency, where he procured his first artist for submission in a record setting three months and first in his position to head the Agent’s Assistants Committee. He was appointed by Senior Partner/Founder, Richard Rosenberg who has served as the head of the William Morris Agency through the 90’s to present.

In 1988, in his first year at Capital Associates Incorporated in account management of computer mainframe central processor sales and leasing Mark was the first to acquire the General Motors/Chrysler account. By 1991, at Orion Products Incorporated, a six figure earner Mark was consistently among the top in sales and sales management for three plus years.

By 1993, his company TMC Entertainment in less than two years produced two Recording Industry Association of America Certified Platinum album artists in the Billboard Top 10 at the same time.

By 1995, Mark had amassed a very impressive portfolio providing consulting and production services for individuals and companies such as Buena Vista Television, Virgin Records, mega record producer Teddy Riley, PBS Frontline-WGBH Boston, Threads for Life/Cross Colours, and environmental industry leader ECO, to name a few. Mark was recognized as a distinguished uniquely talented businessman and entrepreneur with proven ability to think and deliver "beyond the box". As former President of Motown Records and legendary entertainment Attorney Lee Young put it, "Mark has done more in a few years than most do in a career, he is a rainmaker. His strides in the entertainment business are unique and limitless".

In 1997, Mark began his transition to Educator. He considered a profession in law. Mentor / Professor Charles Ogletree Head of Harvard Law School encouraged and offered placement there. He considered continuing in the business world. Garry Concannon former head of President Ronald Reagan’s national re-election campaign, a "Fortune 50 " Vice President, and Chairman of his own top executive search firm recognized Mark’s " life’s worth of accomplishments ". Garry offered Fortune 500 executive level placement. Mark forwent these career opportunities for career opportunities in education. The determinant factor was an illuminating experience in Education as a Career Day Keynote Speaker.

In 1998, according to Director of Special Education, Michael Boal, at Virginia Road Elementary School, LAUSD, as the Career Day Keynote Speaker, "Mark shared his personal experience or knowledge of business and entertainment to provide a tangible connection between academic success and employability as a means to motivate students to set their own career goals".

In 1999, Mark received recognition for his teaching abilities at Virginia Road Elementary School, LAUSD, as an Assistant Resource Teacher, teaching in conjunction with the Head of the Department of Special Education, Michael Boal. He said, "Mark showed himself to be an excellent communicator both orally and in written form to students and to the teachers with whom he regularly worked. He always challenged the students to perform at their highest level of competence; and displayed a tremendous energy and enthusiasm for the importance of learning and academic proficiency as the practical key for students of diverse backgrounds to achieve a more successful future".

From 2002 through present 2010, Mark’s pattern of distinction continues in education. Through positive practical teaching experiences and extensive ongoing professional development he has developed a level of expertise as an Education Specialist -- multiple subject specialization -- Cross-cultural, Language and Academic Development Emphasis, and English single subject specialization. He has maintained Standards Based Instruction, and a model Special Education classroom in Mild to Moderate and Moderate to Severe disabilities, teaching Special Day Class, Special Day Programs, Resource, and Emotionally Disturbed students. He has received administrative recognition for meeting state teaching standards, "Clear Expectations", and for his use of "Learning Modalities" in the classroom and how to use different strategies to approach them. He has also served on the Literacy Cadre for Special Education, twice on Leadership Committees, and the Adopt-A-School Program.

Mark’s greatest sense of accomplishment is knowing that one helps oneself best through helping others. He has a value system firmly entrenched and built on faith, persistence, integrity, decency, and patience. It is always there as a point of reference, a foundation and a center of balance.

1} Central Juvenile Hall, Eastlake –LACOE -- ‘07/’08 – present
· At the invitation & encouragement of the distinguished Dr. Denise Miranda, Principle at Central Juvenile Hall, Eastlake –LACOE ; Mr. Brown accepted & was assigned to one of most challenged "at risk" classrooms, the pregnant teenage mother’s to be. The students required two to three times normal Probation presence, & an average of seven out of seventeen girls were unable to function and make it through a full school day in class. They were relegated to unconstructive "hangin’ out in the hallway.
· He was given a mandate to be "as creative & entertaining as possible."
· Observed first hand on the 16th day of instruction was 12 to 18 of our pregnant teen student mothers to be; fully engaged, in self instruction. They were successfully teaching their class lessons in all four core subjects & two electives --
· Observed by Administrators, Para-Educators, Probation Staff, Facilities Management, & other Hall Staff & Students; & a visitors committee on the Art’s, from LACOE
· Mr. Brown role played as a student receiving instruction. He sat at a student desk at the back of the classroom. He assessed, & occasionally assisted. The students were able to teach on their own competently.

· Successfully conducted self instruction of highly creative grade level standards based lessons provided by Mr. Brown

· Posted each expecting mother’s ultrasound pictures along w/ delivery dates, dilation of the cervix, Dr.’s appointments, baby’s name, names of family members, the babies colors etc.…
· Implemented effectively all essential resources supplied for each respective room. The kitchen had healthy cookbooks, baby bottles , measurement information, safety… The bathroom had a bathing tub, clothes & towels; also childproof medicines, remedies, & all essential items for typical baby care & welfare –the necessities of mother & child, et al respective to each room
· Practiced & learned preparation organization, planning, adaptability, patience, empathy, value of authority, rule making, following directions, time management, financial management, checkbook mgmt, bill paying , & overall accepting adult responsibility

· I assessed the talents of a student whose skills are so pronounced that a house guest Animation colleague of mine of the recent E Insurance spots [Dave Rodriguez] & trained at Cal Arts & Disney, directed the student to the internship programs at Disney, Nickelodeon & Cartoon network-- Dave unfortunately is in China & I need this done now
· Through the courts the Judge granted early release & placement w/ the stipulation that this young man follow through w/ these opportunities, monitored by probation, & report to the court JUNE 2008

· On several occasions Mr. Brown’s have been observed thoroughly engaged in the expressive acts of writing original song lyrics, creating a beat, sometimes melody & harmony, & students recording students materials live in class among their peers
· This has led to the discovery of some unique student talent

· One such talented student, when finished "puttin’down" his stuff and 12 of his culturally diverse classmates burst into combustible applause --leapt to their feet clapping & jumping up & down all the way towards the artist as if drawn by a magnet
