About yourself
Pamela Nichols, one half of ONUTSS hails from the Bronx, New York and has always taken her music very seriously. A child of 70’s music when music came through various types of what she refers to as a “music box”, that at the time included the onslaught of the portable phonograph and the portable radio (boom box) with an audio tape cassette attached to it. She used to bring 45 records and tapes to hang out on the stoop of her building to share music with friends and just have a good time listening and dancing to the music. She always loved a funky beat and sounds of funk bands of the 70’s and 80’s, like the Ohio Players, Cameo, Parliament Funkadelik, Brass Construction, B.T. Express, Rose Royce, T. Connection, along with James Brown and his band of funky protégés; they are Pam’s all time favorite funk artists.
Pam also grew up with the sounds of DJ Kool Herc, who played at the Hevelo, The Twilight Zone, Executive Playhouse and at the park on Sedgwick Ave where he grew up; all taking place in the Boogie Down Bronx. After those parties dissipated, Pam became a party animal at Club 371 and Disco Fever where she could always be found hanging out at the dj booth schmoozing it up with DJ’s Hollywood, Reggie Wells, June Bug, and Eddie Cheeba, just to name a few, to make requests and find out whose music they were rockin’.

While many, including Pam, feel they are missing the pure soul, funk and real musicianship that used to saturate radio’s airwaves of the past, it would only be natural for Pam to fall in love with the underground/independent/neo-soul music of today. After she and Detrel discovered they had a passion for Rahsaan Patterson’s music along with the likes of many other soul stirring artists’ music, they felt they needed to do something to help spread the good word about these talented, unnoticed artists and their unheard music. The only thing left for them to do was to provide an additional platform for independent artists to showcase their music and talent to an untapped audience. Therefore, Detrel and Pam gave birth to One Nation Under The Soul Shack (ONUTSS) which was born out of genuine love for music and talented singers who have been by passed for far too long. Their desire is to fill the gap that radio leaves out and bring awareness to the people about good music they are truly yearning for and missing from their lives.

Pam is “a fan of what’s delicious” (Peven Everett) and gets her “high from smoking soul” (Alfonzo Grier). She considers herself one of the hardest working women in Soul business and doesn’t see herself slowing down one bit, so don’t be surprised if you meet her in your daily travels doing what she loves—passing on information about good soul music!

Family

It's been over a year since I blogged over here. I am sitting under the hair dryer, with limited capabilites--other than being able to browse the web on my laptop. I guess that's enough, eh? lol

Today was a long day that started out with me taking my puppy, Jazzee to get next to the last series of shots (yaaay)!

MUSIC: What your life be like without it?

I don't even want to think about it! There have been so many times, especially here lately, where I've been in some sort of funky mood that has dampened my spirit. But when I play my ipod, a lot of the artists (and their music) right here on Soul Commune have really brightened my day and gave me hope that things will turn out alright.

The 5 most important things I must have (in no particular order) every time I leave my house, must be:

My keys
some money
my phone
my metro card
and of course,… Continue

they are the best groups ever.
